3 questions concerning Cleveland Cavaliers’ future
By Tony Pesta
1. What is Porter’s ceiling?
Kevin Porter Jr. has been a bright spot in an otherwise dark season for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Voted the biggest steal of the 2019 NBA Draft by his peers, Porter has been looking to make all of the teams who passed on him regret their decision.
Porter is the prototypical wing that has become prominent in the NBA recently. A versatile forward/guard with a solid build and explosive athleticism, Porter can be compared to the likes of Paul George and Jimmy Butler.
His skill set varies with his ability to do just about everything at a decent rate. He can handle the ball, set up teammates, shoot off the dribble, finish above the rim and defend the opposing team’s best perimeter player.
It goes without saying that at 19 years of age, Porter is a raw prospect. He isn’t elite at anything yet but as mentioned above has shown potential in many different ways.
The Cavaliers have brought Porter into the league slowly. Through 34 games he is playing an average of 21.8 minutes and has started in only two matches. As he continues to develop we can expect him to take on a more important role.
In his best stretch of the season, Porter put up 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists across 10 games in under 25 minutes of playing time a night. He has been one of the most productive players on the roster while boasting good efficiency as well.
Are the flashes of potential we are seeing from Porter nothing more than flashes? Or will he blossom into the reliable player the Cavaliers are hoping for?
Once he returns from his recent knee injury, the Cavaliers will begin to put Porter to the test. How he responds down the stretch of his rookie season will show us how legit of a prospect KPJ truly is.
