Before he was sidelined for the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ last four games due to persistent flu-like symptoms, Andrew Wiggins had already regressed to a mean where he was playing a bit more like just a higher-volume edition of the player he’d been over the last few seasons.

In the nine games he did play over the last four weeks, Wiggins averaged 24.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 37.8 minutes per game, but his shooting slash line dropped to .439/.290/.813 while he turned in a negative assist-to-turnover ratio (0.91-to-1).

Over Wiggins’ first 17 games, he shot .450/.345/.716 with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.79-to-1 — nearly twice as high as over the last four weeks. Essentially, Wiggins did the same or less of late, just on more volume. That’s never a great combination.

That’s not to say he didn’t have some great performances. Wiggins put up 34 points on 12-of-20 shooting when the Timberwolves hung with the Clippers for most of the game in a Dec. 13 loss at home. Minnesota was 3-10 over the last four week, 1-8 with Wiggins in the lineup. Wiggins is 10th in the NBA, averaging 35.8 minutes per game this season for an injury-plagued club.
