Milwaukee Bucks: 2010s All-Decade team by position
GM: Jon Horst, 2018-19
Deciding the correct pick for the best executive of the last decade, the Milwaukee Bucks have just two candidates to offer. Most recently is Jon Horst, who has overseen just the last 30 months of the decade.
The rest of the decade (sans three weeks of Justin Zanik as interim general manager) was overseen by John Hammond, now with the Orlando Magic.
Hammond’s case is certainly compelling, in part due to his longevity. In total, he ran basketball operations for nine years. Under his watch, the team drafted Brandon Jennings and Giannis Antetokounmpo, traded for Khris Middleton and attracted the first decent free agent in recent franchise history, Greg Monroe.
He also whiffed on several draft picks — in succession Jabari Parker, Rashad Vaughn, Thon Maker in the first round. He overpaid Miles Plumlee and moved the contract on a prayer.
Jon Horst, on the other hand, has seen largely positive returns from his two years at the helm. He hired head coach Mike Budenholzer, brought in Brook Lopez, and traded for Eric Bledsoe and George Hill.
In the summer of 2019, he kept the core of a 60-win team together despite six of its top seven players being free agents. When he decided not to re-sign Malcolm Brogdon — a reasonably controversial decision — he recouped a first-round pick in a sign-and-trade.
Hammond nearly took this spot, but the bad moves are stark even when compared to excellent moves such as drafting Antetokounmpo at 15 in 2013. Horst’s tenure has been long enough to demonstrate he understands team-building and has a unified vision. He takes the spot here in a tight decision.
