Coach of the Decade: Quin Snyder

Since Quin Snyder took over for Tyrone Corbin prior to the 2014-15 season, the Utah Jazz have enjoyed a 247-195 record, along with a Northwest Division title, three consecutive playoff berths and two Western Conference Semifinals appearances.

Snyder won Coach of the Month in March 2018 and finished second in Coach of the Year voting for the 2017-18 season. He also landed at sixth and eighth respectively for Coach of the Year during the 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons, which firmly anchors him in the top 10 of coaches over the last few seasons.

Snyder preaches defense, and it’s showed in the team’s defensive rating and points allowed per game. In Snyder’s first season as head coach, the Jazz jumped from 29th and 18th respectively in defensive rating and point allowed per game to 14th and first. Moreover, Utah has consistently ranked at the top of the league in defensive metrics during Snyder’s tenure.

Although the Jazz aren’t known for their offense, in their first season under Snyder the team improved from 25th in offensive rating to 17th and have since finished every season ranked 16th or better.

Some claim Snyder’s complex system might be the reason for the Jazz’s poor offensive performance this season; however, the team’s recent play indicates that the performance of the system’s parts was more to blame than the system itself.

Although they currently rank 18th in offensive rating overall, Utah is 11th during the month of December and they’re third in the NBA over their last 10 games. Evidently, when players are hitting shots, the system can position the Jazz atop the league offensively.
