Small forward of the decade: DeMarre Carroll

This position has been pretty bare for the Atlanta Hawks, leading to DeMarre Carroll being the default “best” at the small forward position, despite just two seasons with the Hawks.

Consideration was given to Joe Johnson and Josh Smith, but when they were used by the Hawks during this decade, Johnson was used more in the shooting guard role while Smith’s build made him a better fit at power forward during the 2010s.

Marvin Williams was used as a small forward in his career with the Hawks, which spanned seven seasons, including three seasons within the 2010s. But we still come back to Carroll, even though he lasted just two seasons with the Hawks before he was  picked up as a free agent by the Toronto Raptors in 2015.

In comparing Williams and Carroll, we see some similarities at the start. Both were decent rebounders with at least 5.0 rebounds per game in their time with Atlanta. Both had slightly above average win shares per 48 marks and slightly below average Player Efficiency Ratings with the Hawks.

Carroll takes the edge here though as Williams, at the time, was a worse 3-point shooter and Carroll put up 11.8 points per game with Atlanta versus Williams’ 10.3 points per game. Still, this was probably the weakest position of the decade for the Hawks.
