In the last two years, the Cavaliers have made four first-round selections. Prospects such as Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Kevin Porter Jr. and Dylan Windler all joined the roster over that span.
Sexton is having a successful second season as a pure scorer, averaging a team-high 17.7 points. However, he has shown little improvement as a playmaker and will likely find his peak as a spark plug off the bench.
As for Garland, he hasn’t been the offensive star that the Cavaliers hoped for. He is scoring just 11.1 points per game on below 40 percent shooting from the field. However, he has looked much better recently, catching his rhythm as a 3-point shooter.
Most notably, Porter has been a breakout star for the Cavaliers. His athleticism has paid off big time on both ends of the floor and he has shown great potential as a shooter. A career-high 24 points on 6-of-9 shooting from deep versus the Houston Rockets has been the highlight of his season thus far.
Even with the Cavaliers’ young core showing flashes, the team is still struggling. Their individual moments of success haven’t translated into overall team success just yet.
It’s clear the Cavaliers have some work to do before returning to the NBA Playoffs. Even the veteran presence of Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson hasn’t helped the squad avoid embarrassment on a nightly basis.
This is why the 2020 NBA Draft is so important for Cleveland. The franchise is growing desperate to find a cornerstone. One of these five prospects may end up being the future of the Cavaliers.
