Why the Mavericks say yes:

The Dallas Mavericks say yes to this for many reasons. First, Chris Paul is a seasoned veteran who knows how to mentor his younger teammates.

Luka Doncic is only 20 and while he is already court aware and makes great decisions, Paul will be able to share his wisdom, making Doncic even better.

The injury scare to Doncic against the Heat also shows that the Mavericks need to have a top quality point guard. The Mavericks offense runs through Doncic most of the time and that is fine … when he is healthy. Having Paul to guide the team if Doncic goes down will help keep the Mavericks in position for a high playoff seed.

The Mavericks are also missing a piece to make them genuine championship contenders. They are flying in the regular season at the moment but it is hard to see them winning a series against the other top teams in the West, particularly both of the Los Angeles teams.

Paul will give the Mavericks an unpredictability which will make them hard to guard. He is a good 3-point shooter and can still carve up an opposition defense to get to his spot or create for others.

The length of Paul’s contract is also a bonus for this team. The core of this team is going to be together for a while. There is a possibility that nine of the current Mavericks will still be on the roster when the Paul contract expires. Continuity builds chemistry and chemistry is vital for championships.
