Last week was a two-part story for the Atlanta Hawks: Part one was what occurred at Charlotte and in the first 47 minutes of the game at Miami. Part two is what came afterward. After hammering the Hornets on their own floor, the Hawks went up six with a minute to play against the Heat, at which time Trae Young declared “it’s over” to the AmericanAirlines Arena crowd.
It was over. Atlanta playing well, that is. From that point, they were outscored 24-4 by the Heat, losing in overtime; lost by 34 at Chicago and took a 10-point loss at home from the Pacers. And as for Young? Oof. He averaged 22.3 points, 9.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds in 36.3 minutes per game, but shot just 34.9 percent overall and 27.5 percent on 10.0 3-point tries a game.
Last week: Lost at Boston 110-88, lost to Houston 116-110, won at San Antonio 117-109 (OT), lost at Milwaukee 125-108
This week: Monday at Toronto, Wednesday vs. Charlotte, Friday vs. Memphis
The good news for the Cleveland Cavaliers was breaking their eight-game losing streak with just their second win of the 2010s at San Antonio on Thursday, beating the Spurs in overtime. The bad news is that the losses are still ugly — blowouts at Boston and Milwaukee this week — and there was a very public spat between coach John Beilein and Tristan Thompson, one of his defenders.
That was quickly resolved, however, per Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. For the week, Jordan Clarkson continued his strong bench play, averaging 18.5 points, 3.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 25.8 minutes per game, shooting 50.9 percent overall and hitting 38.2 percent on 8.5 3-point attempts per game.
