NBA Odds Tuesday: Dallas Mavericks a solid road favorite

The Dallas Mavericks are coming off a big win in Los Angeles Sunday, but the numbers say they could be a good NBA road favorite at New Orleans on Tuesday.

Even though the Dallas Mavericks are coming off the sort of win that can lead to a letdown, they could be a very good bet to continue their winning ways when examining Tuesday’s NBA schedule.

The Mavericks won Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center, snapping L.A.’s 10-game winning streak, and return to action Tuesday night against the New Orleans Pelicans, again on the road.

Though Dallas comes in as a 3½-point favorite, according to information provided courtesy of The Action Network, despite the lengthy trip with just a single day in between, the Mavericks have been mostly money of late.

Dallas is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight games and the Mavericks have covered in 10 of their last 12 road games. Throw in how banged up the Pelicans are along with New Orleans being just 1-4 against the spread in its last five, and the scales start to tip heavily toward the visitors.

This will be the Mavericks’ final trip to New Orleans this regular season, having already won their first meeting 123-116 on Oct. 25.

Dallas is 11-8 against the spread this season, but a sterling 7-2 on the road, while the Pelicans are 9-10 overall against the spread, going 6-4 at home.

Here are the particulars for Tuesday’s matchup between the Mavericks and Pelicans in New Orleans.

Notable: The Detroit Pistons (7-13 overall, 7-12-1 ATS, 1-8-1 road ATS) should come in with some confidence after blasting the Spurs at home on Sunday as they take on their divisional rivals, the Cleveland Cavaliers (5-14 overall, 8-9-2 ATS, 4-5-1 home ATS) for the first time this season. The trends don’t look fantastic for Detroit, just 3-6-1 ATS in its last 10 games.

But the Cavs have lost nine of their last 10 and are 2-7 ATS in their last nine games. Over the last three seasons, the teams have split their 12 meetings down the middle 6-6 straight up, though Cleveland is 5-1 at home in that span. Detroit holds a 127-91 edge in the all-time series.

Orlando Magic at Washington Wizards (minus 1½)

Notable: For every step forward health-wise for the Orlando Magic (8-11 overall, 6-12-1 ATS, 3-5 road ATS), there seems to be a step back. Just as the Magic got Aaron Gordon back healthy, they’ve lost Al-Farouq Aminu indefinitely with a torn meniscus. Orlando is just 2-6 ATS in its last eight games and 1-4 ATS in its last five meetings with the Wizards.

But Washington (6-12 overall), 10-7-1 ATS, 4-3 home ATS) has scuffled to cover of late, going just 1-4 ATS in its last five games. The teams met once earlier this season, with the Magic winning 125-121 at home on Nov. 17. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, the Wizards lead the series 8-5 overall and are 5-1 at home. Orlando leads the all-time series 68-53.

Miami Heat at Toronto Raptors (no line)

Notable: This game was not on the boards at The Action Network. The Miami Heat come in 14-5 overall, 13-5-1 ATS and 5-5-1 road ATS, while the Toronto Raptors are 15-4 overall, 12-6 ATS and 7-1 home ATS. This is the first meeting this season between the clubs.

Over the last three seasons, the Raptors are 8-3 against Miami, with Toronto going 5-1 at home over that span. The Heat, however, lead the all-time series 52-34.

Houston Rockets at San Antonio Spurs (no line)

Notable: Another game not on The Action Network boards, this is a Texas-sized rivalry game between the Houston Rockets (13-6 overall, 10-9 ATS, 4-5 road ATS) and the San Antonio Spurs (7-14 overall, 5-16 ATS, 2-9 home ATS). This will be the first of four games between the Southwest Division combatants.

Over the last three seasons, the Rockets are 7-5 overall, with the teams splitting 3-3 in San Antonio over that period. The Spurs hold a 108-89 edge in the all-time series.

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (minus 2)

Notable: Neither the Los Angeles Lakers (17-3 overall, 11-8 ATS, 4-4 road ATS) nor the Denver Nuggets (13-4 overall, 8-8-1 ATS, 5-5 home ATS) come in with momentum. The Lakers lost at home Sunday to the Mavericks, while the Nuggets blew a 17-point lead before losing in overtime at Sacramento. L.A. is just 2-5 ATS in its last seven, while the Nuggets are 5-2 ATS of late.

Denver is 6-4 against the Lakers over the last three seasons heading into the first meeting of the year between the teams and has gone 4-0 at home over that span. The all-time series, however, is all Los Angeles at 105-70.

Portland Trail Blazers at LA Clippers (minus 9)

Notable: The Portland Trail Blazers turned things around of late with three consecutive wins, improving to 8-12 overall, 9-11 ATS and 7-6 road ATS on the season. The LA Clippers (15-6 overall, 10-10 ATS, 8-4 home ATS) bounced off a loss at San Antonio by hanging 150 on the Wizards Sunday night.  Each team is 4-6 ATS over its last 10 games.

The Clippers on the first meeting between the teams this season, also at Staples Center, 107-101 on Nov. 7. Since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, the teams have split 12 meetings, 6-6, with Portland posting a 4-3 record at Staples Center over that span.
