5 takeaways from New York Knicks weekend back-to-back
1. Defense, or lack thereof
If the New York Knicks want to look at the one thing that set them back this weekend it is their defense. In the two games, it is this end of the court where they lost the game. In both games they were down by double-figures in the first quarter, digging an early hole they were unable to come out of.
San Antonio shot 40-of-75 in the game, for 53.3 percent. They were lights out from distance, going 12-of-23 from beyond the arc, as the Knicks put very little pressure on them defensively. LaMarcus Aldridge led the way with 23 points, while DeMar DeRozan poured in 21. Patty Mills and Trey Lyles scored 17 and 13, respectively, off the bench.
Against the Nets the percentages improved, as they shot 40.3 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from the 3-point line. However, this game was decided at the foul line, where Brooklyn attempted 34 free throws and New York attempted only 16.
Every member of the Nets’ starting five scored in double-figures, led by Spencer Dinwiddie, who had 30 points replacing Kyrie Irving in the starting unit. All five players, except Jarrett Allen, also sank multiple 3-pointers.
In the two games, they attempted 75 3-pointers compared to 31 free throws. Their opponents shot 51 3-pointers and 54 free throws. New York has to make those numbers closer, otherwise, they will continue losing games this season. Allen and Dinwiddie attempted 25 free throws combined.
