5 players that should be part of New York Knicks long-term core
1. RJ Barrett
As with any New York Knicks’ top selection, RJ Barrett had hype surrounding him entering his rookie season. So much hype that he’s been touted as the Knicks’ savior.
Having won four out of 15 games, Barrett isn’t immediately producing wins. However, the production and progress is evident. The rookie is averaging 15.3 points in 33.7 minutes per game. He has also started in every game this season.
Among rookies, the former Duke Blue Devil ranks fourth in scoring, first in minutes per game, second in rebounds per game and second in assists per game (APG).
Additionally, Barrett has negated the concern for his 3-point inefficiency. At Duke, he shot 30.8 percent from distance on 6.2 attempts per game. With the Knicks, his percentage is up to 36.2 percent on 3.1 attempts per game.
It seems that the rook has benefited from having veteran players around him rather than being the main focus for defenses this early in his career. Like Kevin Knox II, Barrett is able to spend this year improving his efficiency from the field rather than being thrown into the fire.
Down the road, Barrett will be that guy that defenses focus on, but for now, working on his efficiency is key for his long-term success.
On the defensive end, Barrett has flashed his instincts and intelligence. According to an Eastern Conference scout, the rookie has impressed so far this season.
"“‘His instincts are better than what we saw coming out of college,’” the Eastern Conference scout said. “‘The drive (to play defense) has always seemed to be there, but he’s used his strength well to be disruptive on that end of the floor.’”"
Is Barrett the Knicks savior? Not yet, but he’s on track. It’s key for the Knicks to recognize this and eventually resign the future star as he is the most important player on the roster.
