Analyzing success of Cleveland Cavaliers starting 5

G: Darius Garland
It has been a slow start to the season for Darius Garland. The rookie is connecting on a lackluster 32.7 percent of shot attempts, but has still been a positive for this young team.
Despite his shooting woes, Garland is able to stay on the floor due to his approach to each game. He hasn’t strayed too far away from the team’s system at any moment, remaining dedicated to the game plan.
Garland is picking and choosing his shots wisely. He isn’t forcing his development and is allowing his more experienced teammates to lead the way.
With this being said, DG is leaving a bit to be desired offensively. John Beilein has commented on how he wishes Garland would be more active in catch-and-shoot opportunities.
Garland is shooting just 8-of-32 from deep, but his mechanics look solid. We have to imagine that at some point his smooth and quick release will become a weapon for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

One thing is certain: Garland has a tight handle. He has already embarrassed a few elite defenders with his shifty dribble moves. His ability to navigate to any spot on the floor has been a bright spot in his game thus far.
Furthermore, Garland is acting as a skilled playmaker for Cleveland. He is averaging a team-high 3.7 assists per game, which is third among rookies.
Garland’s skill as a ball-handler is trickling over into his passing capabilities. He is comfortable making passes with either hand, often hitting cutters without stopping his dribble.
As the season progresses, we can expect DG to flourish as a scorer. For now, he is patiently waiting for his time to shine.
