1. Dwight Howard

There was a surplus of skepticism when the Los Angeles Lakers decided to sign Dwight Howard this offseason. Considering the way his first stint with the franchise went, it was well warranted. Despite everything, Howard voiced his desire to make the most of his second chance in Los Angeles.

So far, he’s done just that.

Yes, he hasn’t been a superstar. Then again, that’s not what the Lakers signed him to be. What they needed was a quality backup big man who could make plays with the limited minutes he was offered. Has Howard checked that box? Absolutely.

Through the first six games, Howard is averaging 6.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game while making 78.6 percent of his field goals. He also has an 20.34 PER, good for third-highest on the team. Not too shabby for a guy who many saw as irrelevant at this point in his illustrious (albeit bumpy) career.

Howard was nothing more than a flier signing for the Lakers. Expectations were minimal considering how small of an impact he’s made for his various teams in recent years. However, if he continues to make a plus impact for the Lake Show moving forward, he could soon qualify as a huge free agency steal. Heck, some bold folks would already put him in that category.
