Young core of Cleveland Cavaliers stepping up in all the right ways
By Tony Pesta
Darius Garland
It may be his first season in the NBA, but Darius Garland is showing the poise and control of a veteran.
Garland has been very selective with his attack thus far. Although fans are begging for his first offensive explosion, Garland has deferred to his more experienced teammates.
This has done wonders for the Cleveland Cavaliers. His willingness to pass has not translated directly to assists, but he is constantly making the correct decisions with the ball in his hands. Rarely has Garland made a questionable pass or attempted a poor shot.
His ballhandling ability has been on display. Garland zips and flies through defenders with a smoothness that few players have. His quick release from the 3-point line has helped him connect on 6-of-18 attempts thus far.
Garland is being patient. He is not rushing his development or looking to do anything outside of his skill set. This is a quality habit for a young player to get into as his time to shine will eventually come.
Overall, Garland is averaging 9.5 points and 3.5 assists per game. As he grows more comfortable within the offense, expect these numbers to shoot up.
