Donovan Mitchell comes up big as Utah Jazz win opener; 3 takeaways
By Dean Hasan
1. Mitchell the man on offense
Donovan Mitchell was quiet in the first quarter, not recording a shot attempt from the floor and recording just a single point (he was fouled on his only shot). In the second quarter, he came back strong with nine points, before erupting for 23 points in the second half, including 12 in the fourth.
On the night, he dropped 32 points on an efficient 14-of-22 shooting performance to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds and three dimes. He got inside with ease and his mid-range jumper was money all night long.
Mitchell was a beast on the boards, especially in the fourth where he grabbed five offensive rebounds and recorded key second-chance points for his team. When Mitchell entered the fourth quarter with 9:20 remaining, the Utah Jazz trailed the Thunder 76-72. From that point, the Jazz outscored OKC 28-19 en route to their five-point victory.
Last season, Mitchell had a tendency to score the majority of his points in the second half of games, so look for him to try to get going earlier in games this season or get his teammates going early. Either way, expect Mitchell to be the man in the fourth quarter this season as he looks to take his game to the next level for the Jazz this season.
