Phoenix Suns: Can Booker and Ayton be the next dynamic duo?
By Marc C
While plenty of other NBA teams have dynamic duos of their own, is it possible the Phoenix Suns could be next to follow suit?
The difference between the Phoenix Suns and some of the other teams with duos of their own is that Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton are the only ones that played together on their current team.
However, Booker and Ayton are relatively young in their careers and have not even reached the level of All-Star yet, so if they were to achieve that level, they would technically be a new dynamic duo.
Two good players or one good and one great doesn’t necessarily make a “dynamic” duo in the way we’ve come to know, they are just a great duo. Two great players, however, do make a dynamic duo.
Booker and Ayton are two players with tremendous potential heading into just their second season playing together. In his rookie year, Ayton averaged 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game and Devin Booker averaged 26.6 points per game With these numbers alone, they already have a better duo than most teams in the league.
Ayton is entering his second NBA season and will get better. As for Booker, he can get even better as he will have a great point guard playing alongside him in Ricky Rubio. As I’ve mentioned before in previous articles, Rubio will be a key factor in the progression of Booker and Ayton and with him there the duo can reach new heights.
Before the 2018 Draft, Ayton stated that he and Booker could become the next Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant
Now we may need to calm down with that comparison, but Ayton has the right idea. Ayton and Booker play the same positions as Shaq and Kobe, respectively, and Booker is just as efficient scoring as Kobe — percentage-wise. Booker shot 46.7 percent from the field last season, which was his career-high and that is in large part due to Ayton’s presence.
With both these players feeding off of each other, there’s no stopping them this season. They may not win many games to get the attention they deserve, but they are young and exciting and if they can put up points collectively they will get noticed.
Deandre Ayton and Devin Booker may not be on the level of Anthony Davis and LeBron James or Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but they are two players who can score well and that are both very young.
Devin Booker turns 23 this month and Ayton is 21. They have a lot of time to become a dynamic duo or even the best duo in the NBA. Time will tell, particularly with Ayton because we know Booker can ball. If Ayton can get his numbers anywhere near Shaq’s, not only will they be one of the best duos in the NBA, but the Phoenix Suns will be a legit playoff team.
To answer the question, yes, Booker and Ayton will be one of the next great dynamic duos, but the real question should be “how soon will they get there?” We may find out as soon as this season.
