1. Pascal Siakam, PF, Toronto Raptors
If the Utah Jazz getting their first All-Star since Gordon Hayward is a lock along the lines of a padlock, then Pascal Siakam making his first All-Star Game feels like the lock on a safe. The big ones that heist movies are trying to break into, with thick doors and cycling combinations.
His ascent from late first-round pick that most NBA fans had never heard of into presumed All-Star has been fast but believable. This is no flash-in-the-pan or fool’s gold performance from the Cameroonian forward. He was the Toronto Raptors‘ second-best player for much of last season, and a crucial part of the franchise’s first championship in June.
The Raptors built their foundation on the defensive side of the ball, and he was excellent there. His long reach and quick feet give him an advantage over smaller players but the size to harry larger ones, and he closes passing lanes simply by standing near them and reaching out his arms.
What was more surprising but crucial to his All-Star bid was Siakam’s gains as an offensive player. He is fearless driving and spinning his way to the rim and his ability to handle on the perimeter opened up opportunities for Kawhi Leonard inside. Double Leonard and he would swing the ball out to Siakam, who could shoot or drive inside depending on how the defense adjusted.
This season Leonard is gone, and it is Siakam’s turn to shine. Kyle Lowry is still the emotional leader of this team and Marc Gasol is the defensive captain, but Siakam will need to step up and show he can handle the offensive workload. This will be a great defensive team, but their success this season on offense will come from Siakam.
If he is up to the challenge, then an All-Star berth is surely coming his way.
History tells us Siakam will be joined by three to five others. Which players will break through to make their first All-Star Game? Will there be any surprise entries, players such as Nikola Vucevic who are off our radar during the preseason? The 24 players to suit up in Chicago this year are yet to be determined, but we know they will be fun to watch.
