Phoenix Suns: New coach, new point guard reasons for excitement
By Adam Noel
1. A fresh new backcourt
While it wasn’t the sexiest pickup of the Phoenix Suns offseason, the acquisition of Ricky Rubio in NBA free agency was absolutely a necessary one.
After a season of struggles without a true point guard, the team has locked down its future with Rubio, who comes after spending the last two seasons with the Utah Jazz. The Spaniard pairs with Devin Booker in the Phoenix backcourt and a reboot of his career. Not to say Rubio struggled in his time in Utah, but it was a fit neither could exactly say worked just right.
Now enter Phoenix.
The Suns bring in a point guard that can take the play-making burden off of Booker and allow the guard to get back to shooting at a high level. Not to mention Rubio brings in a 7.7 assists per game career average. And while some say he’s declined, Rubio displayed time and time again last season that he still can pass at a high level.
That could be just what Phoenix needs to flip the script and start winning games.
With an established point guard leading the offense, this may finally be the free agent addition fans have been waiting for. His presence should open the floodgates for Booker and the Suns’ offense this season. And even better, he’s just what the Suns needed to keep Booker happy in the coming seasons.
While the price for Rubio’s services may be steep, his value to the team may be unmatched.
While the Suns may struggle to find wins this season, one place that should provide relief comes from a now balanced backcourt.
