NBA: 10 relative unknowns entering defining seasons in 2019-20
By Fox Doucette
1. Landry Shamet, Los Angeles Clippers
Landry Shamet lucked into a great situation in Los Angeles, going from a trade chip in the Philadelphia 76ers’ acquisition of Tobias Harris to the starting shooting guard-to-be on a roster with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.
He also hit 42.2 percent of his 3-pointers last season, posted an outstanding .604 True Shooting Percentage and did all this while taking 10.4 3-pointers a game, fully 71.1 percent of his overall field goal attempts.
Chances are good that the Clippers are going to take a page from Toronto’s book and manage Leonard’s regular-season minutes carefully. We’ll see him miss a game on back-to-backs or four-in-six stretches, playing around 60 games like he did last year.
When that happens, Shamet is going to be the second option and the safety valve when George draws the defense. He is going to be a mission-critical part of the Clippers’ offense, and in that role, he is going to get plenty of chances on national TV to make his name.
If Shamet can match his production from his rookie season, he will set himself up as an attractive free agent target when he hits restricted free agency a couple of years down the line.
This is Shamet’s Eminem moment. He has one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything he ever wanted in one moment.
Will he capture it? Or will he let it slip?
As you lose yourself in the NBA this season, keep these 10 guys in mind and keep an eye on them. Some will have breakout seasons. Some will fail. Finding out which is which will be a blast.
