Brooklyn Nets plan doesn’t include Kevin Durant for 2019-20
Despite rumors that Kevin Durant might be able to return from injury sooner than anticipated, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks suggests otherwise.
Ever since the initial reports that Kevin Durant tore his Achilles in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, the expectation has been that he would miss the entire 2019-20 season. When the superstar forward signed with the Brooklyn Nets this past summer along with Kyrie Irving, fans anticipated 2020-21 as the year for championship contention.
But over the recent weeks and months, there have been a spattering of reports suggesting that Durant might actually be able to return sometime this upcoming season. These were just rumors however, and although a return still isn’t “impossible,” Nets general manager Sean Marks effectively pushed back against the idea.
"“I think what we’re going to say is the expectations are that he’ll be out for the year,” Marks said to reporters Tuesday. “We’re not going to plan on him playing. His rehab will obviously be predetermined over the course of the next few months, how he goes with our performance team. But ultimately, Kevin will have a large say in when he comes back and how he’s feeling. But, the expectations now are for him to be out for the year.”"
If Brooklyn is playing well and is a top-four seed in the East, perhaps a part of Durant would want to join the team for a playoff push if he’s relatively healthy. But after the controversy surrounding the Warriors’ handling of Durant prior to his achilles tear, it would be quite surprising if either he or the franchise did anything that could remotely resemble him “rushing back.”
It’s likely best that the 2019-20 season be used to develop players, build team chemistry and incorporate Kyrie Irving into the franchise. Some playoff reps would be beneficial as well, something that should be a reality given the current talent on the roster. In the meantime, this will give Durant more than enough time to rehab before stepping back on the court.
Marks’ comments could have the added benefit of minimizing any potential distractions the team could face over the course of the season. Yes, answering questions about a player returning is much better than questions about a player leaving in free agency. Still, it might be best for the team to not have the prospect of a Durant return constantly looming.
Other Nets nugget
Wilson Chandler was suspended 25 games due to a performance-enhancing drug violation, and Rodions Kurucs is potentially facing consequences for assault allegations from his ex-girlfriend. As a result, the Nets may have a need at the forward position, and the team has reportedly considered some potential signings.
Carmelo Anthony has been rumored as a fit, but this is now reportedly “very unlikely.” Time will tell if the franchise decides to sign anyone.
