Acquiring the first pick altered the type of deal the front office was seeking in return for Davis, they knew Zion Williamson was going to be their new cornerstone and as such needed the best supporting cast possible.
Boston had reportedly taken both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum off the negotiation table following Davis’s camp stating he wouldn’t re-sign, leaving the path clear for the Lakers to make their move.
A return package headlined by Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball provided the Pelicans with upgrades immediately, more importantly though, the team got younger.
