NBA: Top 10 candidates for 2019-20 Defensive Player of the Year
By Phil Watson
Anthony Davis wanted out of New Orleans and finally got his wish.
Now a member of the storied Los Angeles Lakers, Davis could be the addition that gets the Lake Show back to the playoffs after a franchise-record six-year drought.
The Lakers have missed the postseason more times in the last six seasons — six — than they had in the franchise’s first 65 seasons in existence — five — and Davis’ addition is expected to turn that around.
So he is facing some pressure.
But he’s also got an opportunity for the bright lights to shine on his defensive game, built on athleticism and timing.
In seven NBA seasons, Davis has led the NBA in blocks three times and is also a three-time All-Defensive selection.
If Davis can help Los Angeles get back to the postseason, his defensive work will play a large part in that. Between Davis and what’s left of Dwight Howard as a rim protector, getting to the tin against the Lakers could be a daunting challenge.
He is, after all, just one season removed from this montage of defensive goodness.
His reputation took a hit last season after he asked out of New Orleans, but he gets a chance at a fresh start in Los Angeles, a city that has embraced other teams’ stars for decades and made them its own.
If he’s healthy, he might be in the best position situationally to make a run at the Defensive Player of the Year award.
