Kevin Porter Jr.

Goal: Become the sixth man

Dubbed the biggest steal of the 2019 NBA Draft, Kevin Porter Jr. has high expectations for a player taken with the 30th overall pick. Porter caught the eyes of scouts everywhere with his explosive athleticism, but, can he make a successful jump to the NBA?

At his core, Porter is naturally gifted. He has great speed and jumping ability, giving him all of the tools needed to be effective. In one season with USC, Porter averaged 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in just 22.2 minutes of playing time per game.

KPJ is well on his way to becoming a versatile guard. An above 40 percent 3-point shooter in college, Porter can potentially expand his range to the NBA level and knock down deep shots with consistency.

He has a long way to go defensively but is the ideal body type for a wing defender in today’s league. At some point in his career, KPJ should become a two-way player with 3-and-D attributes.

As for now, Porter needs to focus on putting everything together. He was impressive in small bursts for USC but must improve in nearly every aspect. A realistic goal for Porter would be to earn a consistent spot in the lineup, most likely in a sixth-man role.

Here, KPJ can learn the ropes and work on his game without the stress of playing against opposing starters. Leading the second unit with Jordan Clarkson is a nice position for Porter as he attempts to hone his talents.
