Getting more playoff reps

The Nets are widely expected to make the playoffs this year but not expected to challenge for a banner, the reality while Durant continues his recovery from a ruptured Achilles. Good things come to those who wait because while Durant continues to heal, his new teammates have another year to gain invaluable playoff experience.

Surpassing the first round will be the minimum benchmark in regards to evaluating improvement. With the additions of Kyrie and DeAndre, this should not be a tall order.

Coaches talk of developing winning habits and how those habits contribute to success over the long term. Now, they are primed to develop those habits under the pressure of the playoffs. Having Allen, LeVert, Dinwiddie and others battle-hardened for next year should not be underestimated.

A gargantuan effort is required to raise a championship banner into the rafters. Having superstars helps but it does not guarantee success. By having another season to experience the physicality, hostility, and pressure this team will be better conditioned for the deep runs that lie ahead over the next few years.

Dynasties take time. The Warriors had two consecutive early playoff exits in both 2013 and 2014. They would go on to win three titles in five straight Finals. Durant was a huge part of that team and he figures to have the same impact in Brooklyn.

The similarities are striking. This year the Nets are projected to have a run into the East Semis. Then Durant will be added to the roster and title expectations begin to loom. With Kyrie and Durant both champions, they will be able to help the younger guys navigate the pitfalls that can occur when you are expected to dominate.

The similarities don’t stop at similar playoff outlooks. LeVert is a player who has had a similar start to his NBA career as Stephen Curry. Both having injury issues to start their careers and making their name during the teams return to the playoffs scene, LaVert isn’t Curry nor is he likely to reach that level but he will be pushing for an all-star appearance if he can carry his form into this season.
