team. 211. . Grizzlies. . Brandon Clarke. 7

Based on how he performed at the Las Vegas Summer League, the Memphis Grizzlies may have a hard time keeping No. 21 overall pick Brandon Clarke off the court.

The 22-year-old Canadian played two seasons at San Jose State before transferring to Gonzaga. Clarke slid further down the draft board than many projected before he was chosen by the Oklahoma City Thunder and traded to the Grizzlies for the rights to Darius Bazley.

Clarke, at 6’8″ and 215 pounds, has the quickness to play the 3-spot, where incumbent Kyle Anderson is the starter heading into training camp and also the position where former lottery pick Josh Jackson will be looking to rehabilitate his career after being traded by the Phoenix Suns.

But Clarke checks a lot of the boxes a team has on its checklist when looking for an impact player on the wing. He shot the ball well in Vegas, he rebounded well and his defense was off-the-charts good.

In his lone season at Gonzaga as a redshirt junior, he averaged 17.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 1.2 steals in 28.1 minutes per game. But he was not a perimeter guy, shooting 68.7 percent overall while going 4-for-15 from 3-point range.

It is his defensive versatility that makes him so intriguing for the rebuilding Grizzlies, as he averaged 14.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 blocks in just 22.0 minutes per game while winning MVP honors at the Las Vegas Summer League.

He shot 55.2 percent overall and was 5-for-9 from deep, so there was — in a very limited sample size — signs he could stretch his range.

If new coach Taylor Jenkins decides it’s time to just commit to the youth movement, Clarke could be a beneficiary of that move.
