2. Hiring Dwane Casey

Last offseason, the Pistons fired Stan Van Gundy, and they went on a coaching hunt. In the process, they found a coach that had gone to an Eastern Conference Finals and he had won the NBA’s Coach of the Year Award for the 2017-18 season.

The personnel that was on the team didn’t perfectly fit his system, but he found a way to adapt while management went to work to add talent to the right places.

After a couple of rough seasons to start with the Toronto Raptors, he developed them into a consistent conference contender that eventually got the pieces last season to make a championship run.

With a roster that is going through a lot of turnover to better fit his scheme, it’s going to take likely until the 2020-21 season that the Pistons will start to make some real progress up the rankings.

Until then, the Pistons have a coach that is one of the smarter ones in the game. He learned how to maximize various players strengths last season, and he has some new weapons on the roster that have given them more quality depth considering how thin they were last season.

It’s not going to happen overnight with Casey, but, given the time, he can build something up in the Motor City.
