3. LeBron James (2018-present)

Yes, he’s only played one season for the Los Angeles Lakers. And yes, that season ended without a playoff berth. That is why LeBron James isn’t ranked No. 1 on this list.

Because if this was strictly about comparing the entire careers of players who have suited up for the Lakers, LeBron would be ahead of every small forward the franchise has ever had.

LeBron sits at No. 3 because even in his short run that has yet to bear championship fruit, he’s done a lot. He is also one of the three men on this list who spent at least one season recognized as the No. 1 option for the Lakers. And he’s simply the best overall basketball player on this list.

Last season was considered a “down year” for the future Hall of Famer. LeBron averaged 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game and was voted All-NBA Third Team — snapping his streak of 12 straight First Team selections.

Last season also saw the end of LeBron’s streak of eight straight NBA Finals appearances. Not only did the Lakers not make the Finals, but they missed the playoffs altogether with a 37-45 record.

LeBron suffered a groin injury that sidelined him for about a month; he wound up playing just 55 games for the season.

The bright spots included a 51-point game against the Miami Heat, eight triple-doubles, a few game-winners and daggers, and the night when LeBron passed Michael Jordan for No. 4 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list while wearing a Lakers uniform.

LeBron’s L.A. story is still being written. Whatever happens in the next few years could move him up or down this ranking.
