The Cleveland Cavaliers might consider tanking to speed up their rebuild. Here are the pros and cons behind tanking this season.

Tanking is a common method used in the NBA to help stack up on valuable draft picks for the future. While this tactic has worked out for some teams, it certainly comes with a risk. For the Cleveland Cavaliers, this risk may outweigh the potential rewards.

The Cavaliers are no strangers to tanking. In fact, some may argue that the franchise intentionally lost some games last season. By limiting their best players and trading away experienced veterans, the front office successfully put the team in a position to lose.

Why would any franchise do this? Well, it’s pretty simple. The worst teams in the league receive the highest odds to land the number one draft pick. Securing a generational talent via the NBA Draft is the easiest way to rebuild a squandering lineup. Even with the lottery odds built to discourage tanking, it’s still the most logical route for bottom-feeding teams.

Of course, tanking isn’t a flawless system. Some would suggest avoiding this method altogether is the best option. Still, tanking should be looked at on a case-by-case basis. Today, let’s break down the possible reasons why the Cavaliers should, or shouldn’t, tank this season.
