3. Dennis Smith Jr.

The New York Knicks acquired Dennis Smith Jr. in their blockbuster trade before the NBA trade deadline in February. He was the main piece, along with two future draft picks, in the package for Kristaps Porzingis.

Smith’s start to his Knicks tenure was rocky, at best. He wasn’t in the best shape as the end of his tenure in Dallas was rocky. He should come into this season motivated to win the starting point guard job and show the organization that they have a point guard for the future.

Smith has incredible athleticism, something he showcased recently as Jamal Crawford’s Pro-Am in Seattle. He had an impromptu dunk contest with Aaron Gordon.

Smith will not be handed the starting job. The team signed veteran Elfrid Payton and he will be given every opportunity to win the starting point guard spot himself. That should push Smith to come into training camp in great shape.

If Smith can hone his point guard skills, he has a chance to become an excellent player. His athleticism is rivaled by very few players at the position, but he needs to improve his jump shot.

Being with the Knicks for a whole offseason should help Smith get acclimated If he comes in focused and ready to go, he could be in for a career season.
