Dallas Mavericks: 3 big questions heading into 2019-20
By Jordan Foote
Having missed out on the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, anticipation is building for something big for the Dallas Mavericks.
The Dirk Nowitzki era is officially over. Luckily for the Dallas Mavericks, the future is bright.
After winning 33 games in 2016 and falling to 24 wins the following season, Dallas was able to climb back up to a 33-49 record in 2018. Had it not been for a flurry of midseason trades that left the league Rookie of the Year, Luka Doncic, practically by himself, that number may have been higher.
Those trades were necessary, though. In addition to clearing necessary cap space, the Mavericks were able to get Doncic a co-star. Prying power forward/center Kristaps Porzingis away from the New York Knicks and signing him to a five-year, $158 million contract, the franchise made a statement: It’s tired of losing.
Heading into the 2019-20 season, the Mavericks’ roster looks a lot different than it did a year ago. The core piece is still there, though, and his supporting cast appears to be more substantial than it previously was.
The additions of Seth Curry, Delon Wright and Boban Marjanovic add some much-needed depth to a team desperate for it as recent as a couple of months ago. Re-signing some players from last year’s squad, owner Mark Cuban and general manager Donnie Nelson appear ready to reload and make a run at the postseason. What questions need to be answered for that to happen?
