Philadelphia 76ers: The truth behind Ben Simmons’ improved jump shot
By Tony Pesta
Potential improvement
Finally, it’s time to analyze the video that began this discussion in the first place. Ben Simmons took NBA Twitter by storm when footage of him knocking down 3-pointers during an open gym sparked the belief that he has taken a massive step forward.
In this clip, we can see that his form is unchanged. Simmons continues to release the ball with his left hand at an awkward angle, but it appears not to impact his shot as much as it used to.
Furthermore, Simmons is doing a better job of setting his feet before shooting. Most of these attempts are either step-backs or fadeaways, but he is displaying much better footwork in gathering himself before beginning his shooting motion.
Lastly, it’s important to note that Simmons is attempting 3-pointers at all. In this video alone we see him shoot (and make) more than half the amount of 3-pointers he attempted in 79 games last season.
Of course, we must take all of this information with a grain of salt. What we watched was a collection of highlights, not the entire footage.
With no clear sign of any improvements to his form, there is no telling if Simmons has actually become a better shooter or if he will even attempt to shoot like this next season.
Still, this is a promising indication at the very least for fans of the Philadelphia 76ers. Simmons will be successful either way, but adding a jump shot to his game will take him to the next level.
