NBA: Ranking 30 best power forwards for 2019-20
By Phil Watson
We get to our first actual veteran on the countdown as Dario Saric looks to bounce back from a rough season with two clubs in 2018-19 with a fresh start in the Valley of the Sun.
The Phoenix Suns picked up Saric along with the rights to No. 11 overall pick Cameron Johnson, sending the rights to sixth overall selection Jarrett Culver.
It was the second time in less than a year Saric had been dealt, as he was part of the package the Philadelphia 76ers sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves last November to get Jimmy Butler.
Saric worked off the bench a lot in Minnesota, starting only 28 of his 68 appearances after starting Philadelphia’s first 13 games, but after starting off the season in a terrible shooting slump, he rebounded with the Timberwolves.
With Minnesota, Saric averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 23.9 minutes per game, shooting 45.4 percent overall and 38.3 percent on 3.7 3-point attempts per game, bringing his overall numbers on the season to 10.6 points and 5.6 boards in 25.0 minutes on 43.7 percent and 36.5 percent shooting.
Minnesota was marginally better with Saric out there at 0.7 points per 100 possessions, but he has a chance to be a viable third option behind Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton with the Suns.
Saric is entering his fourth NBA season and is already 25, having spent two years as a draft-and-stash with Anadolu Efes in Turkey after the 76ers acquired his rights from the Orlando Magic on draft night in 2014.
He showed two seasons ago he can be an important contributor on a good team, putting up 14.6 points, 6.7 boards and 2.6 assists a night for Philadelphia as their starting 4 in 2017-18.
If Phoenix is to take a step forward after wandering through the desert the past four seasons — winning just 87 games in that span — the Suns need Saric to be that player again.
