NBA: Ranking 30 best power forwards for 2019-20

Rudy Gay is a player who successfully made the transition from the 3 to the 4 over the last two seasons since going to the San Antonio Spurs, a move that likely aided his return from an Achilles tear in January 2017.
If doesn’t hurt that Gay is 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds while still retaining at least some of the quickness that made him a mid-range delight for the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings.
That also made him a fit for the Spurs, who were the least-prolific 3-point shooting team in the NBA last season.
Coach Gregg Popovich managed Gay’s workload last season, playing him in 69 games and giving Gay 51 starts, with with Davis Bertans gone in a trade and newcomer Trey Lyles in, Gay will need to do more of the heavy lifting if the Spurs are to keep their 22-year-run of playoff appearances intact.
Gay averaged 13.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 26.7 minutes per game last season, shooting career-highs of 50.4 percent overall and 40.2 percent on 2.7 3-point attempts a night.
He’s still got that mid-range working, though, hitting 57.2 percent from 10-16 feet and a solid 50 percent from 16 feet out to the arc.
San Antonio was 3.1 points better per 100 possessions with Gay on the court last season, his first full campaign back from the Achilles injury.
He’s 33 now, but his game translates fairly well to remaining effective at a later age — provided he remains healthy.
