The Sacramento Kings have deepened their roster substantially this offseason, leading to some questions about players’ roles and opportunity.

While the obvious next step of progression for this Sacramento Kings team is making the playoffs, that is not the end all be all of failure or success for the coming season. A new coach and new feeling of hope are apparent throughout the city, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

There is no banner being risen into the rafters of the Golden 1 Center in 2020. The path to legitimate contention is centered around continued improvement from their young core of De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield, Marvin Bagley III and whoever else can play their way into that conversation.

The new additions of Cory Joseph, Dewayne Dedmon, Trevor Ariza and Richaun Holmes — along with the re-signing of Harrison Barnes — makes Sacramento one of the deepest teams in the association. But they are all simply complementary pieces that are placeholders for the long term young talent that now has some competition for minutes.

Bagley has the highest ceiling on the team and Buddy is the current top scorer that is extension eligible. Harry Giles is the fan-favorite who has a very telling year ahead of himself competing for playing time and Bogdan Bogdanovic could be on the outside looking in come free agency. It should be an entertaining year no doubt, but there are a few major questions to keep tabs on.
