Golden State Warriors: 3 big questions heading into 2019-20
By Alan Mena
3. Will Stephen Curry have another MVP-caliber season?
Stephen Curry is entering his 11th NBA season at 31 years old. Due to the nature of Curry’s game, his career is far from over.
However, when Kevin Durant decided to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016, Curry’s numbers regressed just like Draymond Green’s did.
In the year before KD’s arrival, Curry averaged 30.1 points (career-high), 5.4 rebounds (career-high), 6.7 assists, 2.1 steals (career-high), on 50.4 percent shooting overall (career-high), 45.4 percent from 3 and 90.8 percent from the line, in 34.2 minutes a game in 79 appearances.
And let me just casually mention he won the first-ever unanimous-MVP award in NBA history that season.
In the three years during KD’s tenure in Golden State, Curry averaged 26.3 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 steals on 47.8 percent shooting overall, 42.4 percent from deep and 91.2 percent at the foul line.
While these numbers are still MVP-worthy and not much different in comparison to his career and 2015-16 season averages, Curry is once again the best player on the Warriors and has another opportunity to show the NBA and the world why he is a two-time reigning MVP.
Curry is known for putting his ego aside for the opportunity to win multiple championships with other superstars, so he will not have any trouble playing alongside D’Angelo Russell and finishing as a finalist in the MVP race next season.
Conclusion
Curry, Klay, and Green have proven to overcome adversity and have experienced being on the wrong side of history at the conclusion of the 2015-16 NBA Finals.
Klay Thompson recently reacted to the sentiments on the Warriors’ dynasty coming to an end and had a lot to say:
Maintaining the same positive mindset despite suffering series-altering injuries during the NBA Finals is another reason as to why the Warriors will continue to be contenders for the next several years.
Since the Warriors in fact did win a championship before KD’s arrival, we all know what they are capable of.
So expect the Golden State Warriors to be ready to make a run at another NBA championship soon if not after next season.
