Sign Garrison Mathews to a two-way contract

The Washington Wizards jumped on former Lipscomb scorer Garrison Mathews as soon as the draft ended, inking him to a two-way deal and announcing he would play for the Summer League team.

The 6’7” shooting guard/small forward was a scoring machine in college, ending his career as the Atlantic Sun Conference’s all-time leading scorer. He is the deep threat shooting guard the Wizards have never found.

He proved in Las Vegas that he can shoot the long ball in any way possible and that he is not afraid to shoot at any time. He went 6-of-17 from downtown during his three games this summer.

This signing has very few risks. Mathews will likely begin the season in the G League but will see his chances if he can prove his shooting ability and score inside the arc as well.

His biggest question mark is his defensive ability. If Mathews can move his feet with NBA players, expect to see the Wizards tear up his two-way deal and make it official awfully quickly.

Grade: B+
