Washington Wizards: Complete grades for the 2019 NBA offseason

Release Jonathon Simmons
After not moving Jonathon Simmons’ contract for two weeks after his trade on draft day, the Washington Wizards suddenly cut him on July 7.
Overall, the move was inconsequential. His contract will make a small dent in the team’s cap for the season, but had they kept him around, his impact would not have been felt that strongly.
He scored 6.5 points in 19.0 minutes last season off the bench for the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers. He probably would have been a bench option even on a weakened Washington squad had he stayed.
Releasing the University of Houston product was a slightly better option than keeping him because he has no place in the team’s future plans, so there is no need to clutter the bench with another body.
