LA Clippers: How Landry Shamet fit in
By Paul Headley
Projecting forward
Landry Shamet is an elite shooter at a time in NBA history where 3-point shooting is the single most important skill a player can have. His ability to stretch the floor will provide valuable room for Paul George and Kawhi Leonard to operate.
Staggered actions (such as running Shamet off down-screens while George or Leonard run pick-and-roll on the strongside) will give defenses some tough decisions to make.
Shamet doesn’t need the ball to be effective. The only regular rotation player to have a lower usage rate than Shamet (15.0 percent) was guard Patrick Beverley (11.9 percent).
Shamet averaged fewer touches per game (29.0) than forward JaMychal Green (33.0) despite playing just over nine more minutes nightly.
The best-case scenario for Shamet is a Klay Thompson-style offensive player; someone who can have a star-type impact on a team’s offense with a role-players time on ball.
Shamet also plays a position of scarcity, 2 guard, and is on a ridiculously cheap contract. He will make less over the next three years (just under $8 million) than high lottery picks from recent drafts like Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball will make next season only.
Teams with expensive talent like the LA Clippers need cheap players like Shamet. It’s a rare bonus that he’s actually really good and fits perfectly in any line-up.
