Dallas Mavericks

Before the Dallas Mavericks could even think about looking elsewhere in free agency, they first had to take care of their own. It was a task the organization took care of rather quickly in the hope of then turning their focus towards a loaded free-agent market.

After trading for him mid-season, Dallas wasted little time in re-signing Kristaps Porzingis to a maximum five-year, $158 million contract.

There are sure to be concerns regarding a body on the mend from a torn ACL, but it’s a risk that pairs up two of the brightest young stars for the foreseeable future alongside reigning Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic.

Maxi Kleber was given $35 million over four years. While this may seem like an overpay for a guy who averaged 6.8 points per game last season, he brings an underrated level of two-way versatility.

Dwight Powell was given an extension on his deal as well. The five-year big is poised for a breakout with the starting center gig all but his for the taking. An energetic wing defender, Dorian Finney-Smith was given a fresh three-year, $12 million deal.

When it came time to add onto what was already an impressive young core, the Mavs were more level-headed then they’ve been in past years — although not for a lack of trying.

Seth Curry — who played for Dallas in 2016-17 — brings a career 43.9 3-point percentage that will do wonders on the 27th most efficient outside shooting team from a season ago

A late sign-and-trade with the Memphis Grizzlies netted them point guard Delon Wright who, after serving mostly as a backup early in his career, thrived in Memphis and is sure to pair nicely in the backcourt next to Doncic.

The Mavs didn’t have to do much this summer to head into the 2019-20 season confident. They’ve got two generational talents flanked by quality talent. In re-signing its guys along with the additions of Wright and Curry,

Dallas is slowly heading down the right path after years of looking for a quick fix to help aid the now-retired Dirk Nowitzki.
