Detroit Pistons: Complete grades for the 2019 NBA offseason
By Phil Watson
Overall
The Detroit Pistons — whether they really like it or not — are locked in for another season with the triumvirate of Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson accounting for the bulk of their available cap space.
So the moves this offseason — short of a blockbuster trade with gigantic contracts moving both directions — were going to be minor in nature.
Ed Stefanski rolled the dice on a risky player in Derrick Rose and hopes to be the guy who finally gets the most out of Christian Wood.
He also brought in solid, but unspectacular, veteran reserves in Markieff Morris and Tim Frazier, while draft additions Sekou Doumbouya and Deividas Sirvydis will need time to adjust to the NBA game.
The Pistons weren’t in a position for a slam-dunk offseason and they didn’t get one, but they made quality additions — with health concerns surrounding Rose and Morris — that should add to their depth.
Will it be enough to move up in a reshuffled Eastern Conference that saw bold moves from the the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets? Or is another season of treading water in the middle of the East in the offing?
