Signing Tim Frazier

The Detroit Pistons picked up a veteran backup point guard by signing Tim Frazier to a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal.

Frazier finished out last season with the Milwaukee Bucks after being let go by the New Orleans Pelicans before the waiver deadline for postseason eligibility and gave the Bucks some valuable fill-in minutes down the stretch when Malcolm Brogdon was sldelined.

In 59 games overall last season, Frazier averaged 5.3 points, 4.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 19.0 minutes per game, shooting 44.4 percent overall and hitting 36.6 percent — a career-high — on 1.7 3-point attempts per game.

Frazier is smallish at 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Frazier can be a liability defensively, but he is effective at running an offense and getting the ball where it needs to go.

He’s an effective shooter in the mid-range, hitting 45.5 percent from 10-16 feet last season and 37.5 percent from the dreaded deep mid-range area.

Despite his lack of size, he’s surprisingly adept as a finisher at the rim, hitting 64.8 percent of his attempts in the restricted area last season.

He’ll be looked to spell Reggie Jackson at the 1 next season and will be OK in small doses. But he’s not a player you want to look to if you need more than that.

Grade: C+
