San Antonio Spurs: Complete grades for the 2019 NBA offseason
Spurs hire Tim Duncan as an assistant coach
The Big Fundamental has returned to the silver and black. San Antonio Spurs lifer, legend, champion and basketball savant Tim Duncan is joining the coaching staff as an assistant coach.
There is not much that can make me more excited than the idea that Pop and Becky Hammon both get ejected from a game and Duncan has to coach the team to victory.
Duncan’s presence on the bench and in the locker room is going to be the most beneficial move the Spurs have made all summer.
Duncan can teach any player something valuable. There is a reason that Duncan is so respected around the league and especially within the Spurs.
His calm demeanor, skill, work ethic, and his down to earth approach to life makes him the best candidate for a spot like this, and maybe eventually a head coaching position.
This is the most fitting time for Duncan to join the Spurs’ staff. They are facing one of the most challenging years, competition-wise, in the west. There is an array of young talent that needs mentorship from players and coaches alike.
The Spurs are clinging to contention but know the threat of drafting in the lottery for the first time in 22 years (since Duncan was drafted) is looming. Duncan will be beneficial for the players, but just as important to coach Popovich.
Tim Duncan is a part of the Spurs again (although you can say that he never left and will never leave) and everything is sweet and sound.
