Spurs draft guard Quinndary Weatherspoon

Later in the draft, with the 49th pick, the San Antonio Spurs took Mississippi State senior shooting guard Quinndary Weatherspoon. Second-round draft picks tend to not be ultimately important.

There are never very high expectations placed on players drafted late, but just about every year there is a gem found. For the Spurs, they already have a lot of quality guards. Weatherspoon is merely a G League piece that can be on a two-way deal for his first season.

Weatherspoon doesn’t show a lot of issues in his game.

From NBA.com:

"[Weatherspoon] possesses decent size for a guard measured at 6’4.25 in shoes with a solid 6’9 wingspan and a strong 207-pound frame at the NBA Combine. Fluid athlete with good body control and nice explosiveness on the move."

In his senior year, he was a finalist for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year award. Yet he did not receive any first-round buzz.

A two-way contract is going to be the right fit for Weatherspoon in his first season. It will be interesting to see if he plays any NBA minutes unless injuries open a hole on the main roster. Development is still key for him.
