Boston Celtics: Complete grades for the 2019 NBA offseason
By Adam Taylor
Re-signing Daniel Theis
Another player returning to the Boston Celtics this year is Daniel Theis, the German big man who displayed an ability to stretch the floor while providing a spark on the boards.
Last season he played 66 games and averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists, hitting 38.8 percent from 3.
It makes sense Boston would move to re-sign Theis, as he is now the team’s only legitimate stretch big. You can expect to see his minutes and numbers increase throughout the season due to this.
Another player on a tradeable contract, Theis is locked in for two years at $10 million with the second year non-guaranteed. His second year will become fully guaranteed if not waived by July 3, 2020, though, making this contract valuable during trade talks.
The Celtics now have multiple big’s on tradeable contracts who will be able to showcase their skills on the NBA stage. Basically they are being given the opportunity to play themselves into longevity on this roster or another.
With Theis’ main competition coming in the form of rookie Grant Williams, it’s going to be interesting to see how many minutes he can command in the rotation.
