Talen Horton-Tucker

After trading their 2019 lottery pick (plus future picks) to acquire Anthony Davis, the Lakers traded back into the draft and used the 46th overall selection on Iowa State freshman Talen Horton-Tucker.

The 6’4″ wing from Chicago’s vaunted Simeon Career Academy averaged 11.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game at Iowa State. He helped the Cyclones win the Big 12 conference tournament and make the NCAA Tournament as a No. 6 seed.

The most impressive performance of Horton-Tucker’s brief college career happened early, in just his fifth game. It happened against the marquee school from his home state, but it took place a long way from Chicago.

At the Maui Invitational, Iowa State defeated Illinois as Horton-Tucker put up 26 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and a steal.

Not even 18 years old at the time, Horton-Tucker showcased the best parts of the skill set that made it a smart move for him to leave school early for the next level.
