Overall

In the big move of the offseason for the team, Atlanta managed to trade a semi-invaluable future first, a solid secondary playmaker in Nickeil Alexander-Walker and future rim-protecting force in Jaxson Hayes for arguably the best 3-and-D prospect in the 2019 draft, De’Andre Hunter.

Thanks to receiving the No. 57 pick in that big trade, the team was able to move back up into the second round to get their backup center, Bruno Fernando.

Travis Schlenk made some roster clearing moves and strengthened the depth of the team with trades for Evan Turner, Chandler Parsons and Damian Jones. Receiving Allen Crabbe from the Nets gives him depth at both the 2 and 3 also.

Adding Jabari Parker was also an interesting move, but could prove valuable for the team if he gets back to his pre-knee injury days. It also encapsulates the team right now: the Hawks have their stars in John Collins and Trae Young.

Built around them is a good mix of defensive-mind players in Cam Reddish and Hunter. They have a couple savvy veterans to teach the young players as well and give them depth when it is needed.

This was Schlenk’s busiest offseason yet. However, it could prove to be his best too. The Hawks seem to be past the rebuilding stage and on to making noise in the Eastern Conference yet again.

They may be a year or two away from being a true contender, but the moves they have made are making people select them as a dark horse playoff team in the East.

Hunter could pan out for them, but they gave up a lot of talent if he doesn’t work out, which could set them back a couple of seasons again.
