Oklahoma City Thunder: Complete grades for the 2019 NBA offseason
By Alec Liebsch
Overall
The Oklahoma City Thunder tried to flip Chris Paul somewhere else, but after the free agency dust settles, swaps with as much money as Paul’s contract are hard to come by until newly-minted free agents become available to trade (Dec. 15).
In the meantime, Paul can join Danilo Gallinari, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Andre Roberson and Steven Adams to form an intriguing core that could ostensibly compete for a playoff spot.
Any other rebuilding team would be ill-advised to keep competing, but the Thunder are in a very unique position.
Gilgeous-Alexander projects as a future All-Star, so long as Paul doesn’t stunt his growth; he’s a building block that the Thunder didn’t have to tank for. Also, OKC is in control of so many picks that don’t even belong to them. They have an enormous headstart over the average rebuild.
There isn’t much of a young core in Oklahoma City just yet, but their treasure trove of assets are a fine supplement. Well done, Sam Presti and Co.
