4. Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards are a mess.

John Wall — slated to make $38.2 million next season — may miss the entire 2019-20 season after tearing his Achilles.

Over the summer the team lost rotational players Thomas Satoransky, Trevor Ariza, Bobby Portis, Jabari Parker and Jeff Green and have been operating without a general manager since Ernie Grunfeld‘s firing on April 2.

Through all of the mess the Wizards have something great: Bradley Beal.

To clean up the mess, they may have to get rid of him.

Beal is eligible for a three-year, $111 million extension at the end of July and Washington will undoubtedly offer it to him. If their star guard turns it down, it would be in the Wizards’ best interest to explore the trade market.

Washington projects to be short of the luxury tax line next season by about $2 million, but a look at their current roster — and the rest of the Eastern Conference — suggests that they most likely will miss out on the playoffs again.

With Wall’s massive contract on the team’s payroll for the next four seasons and a lack of high upside young players (exceptions: Rui Hachimura and Thomas Bryant) the quickest route to cleaning up the books and restocking the cupboard is trading Beal.

The Lakers had to give up three high quality young players (Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart), three first-round picks and two pick swaps to land Anthony Davis.

The Clippers traded five first-round picks (one of them protected), two pick swaps, second-year guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the expiring contract of Danilo Gallinari for Paul George.

It’s probably a safe assumption that the Wizards could command a similar haul for Beal considering his age (26 years old), shooting ability (38.4 percent from 3 for his career) and experience (entering his eighth season and played in 40 career playoff games).
