NBA: 10 stars that could be on the move next
Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors
Steph Curry may be the poster child of the Golden State Warriors, but Draymond Green in the heart of the franchise.
Drafted 35th overall in 2012, Green has continually exceeded expectations on the court while being polarizing due to his competitiveness and aggressiveness.
He is the Warriors “do-it-all” guy, being the defensive anchor along with averaging 9.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game throughout his career, often initiating the offense.
For the Warriors, though, all good things eventually come to an end and, with the departure of Kevin Durant, the ending of the Warriors dynasty may be upon us.
Golden State is hard capped for the 2019-20 season due to their sign-and-trade for D’Angelo Russell. This means that they absolutely cannot spend over $138.9 million on salary.
While they will dodge that number next season (because they have to, per team rules), that hard cap goes away in the 2020-21 season.
Coincidentally Green will be eligible for a max contract that summer worth nearly $38 million per season — $20 million more than what he will make next year.
That number would vault the Warriors sky high into the luxury tax. With other teams in the Western Conference rising to the top, Golden State’s stars aging and a massive tax bill on the horizon it may be time for the franchise to look into trading their controversial forward.
