NBA: 10 stars that could be on the move next
DeMar DeRozan, San Antonio Spurs
In the modern NBA it is basically a necessity to be able to shoot from 3-point range, regardless of position.
DeMar DeRozan doesn’t really fit the modern NBA.
After nine seasons in Toronto, the Raptors traded DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs last summer in exchange for Kawhi Leonard. A year later it may be time for the Spurs to look to trade him as well.
DeRozan is a productive player. He averaged 21.2 points, six rebounds and 6.2 assists last season in San Antonio. His perimeter shooting, however, is an issue — not just because being able to shoot 3s results in more points, but also because it creates valuable spacing on the floor.
Couple DeRozan’s deficiencies with the fact that San Antonio now has multiple promising young players (Lonnie Walker, Keldon Johnson and Dejounte Murray just to name a few) on the wing and it starts to make even more sense why the Spurs should look to trade the four-time All-Star.
DeRozan has two years left on his contract, with the second year being a player option.
It’s unclear what the market for him would look like considering other teams may also shy away due to his shooting weaknesses, but as San Antonio continues to turn over their roster with younger players it seems like trading DeRozan may be the best move going forward.
